Disaster Services Volunteers

When disaster strikes, the American Red Cross stands ready to shelter and feed people until the danger is past, and then to help them rebuild their lives. Our chapter's Disaster Action Team volunteers are on call 24 hours a day to go to the scene of local disasters such as home or apartment fires, industrial fires, tornadoes, or other damaging storms. We serve food to victims and rescue workers, if needed, and help those affected obtain emergency needs -- for example: temporary shelter, food, clothing, medications for life-threatening illnesses, and a few other basic needs. In case of a large disaster affecting hundreds or thousands of people, American Red Cross can mobilize trained disaster workers from around the state, and around the country, on very short notice to help local chapters assist people in need. All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by the voluntary donations of time and money from the American people.

Disaster Team Meetings

The Disaster Team meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month. The meetings will last from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. In case of bad weather, we will follow the school closing schedule.

If you would like to join the Disaster Team, call 864-638-5619 for details, or just drop by and fill out an application. The Disaster Team is a very important part of the Red Cross. Once you become a member, your participation is very important to help us serve our community with disaster relief. Not only do we serve the victims of disaster, but we also serve those who work the disaster. You must be able and willing to serve 24/7, based on your availability. You will receive free specialized training so that you can be a productive Team member. If you have the time, and you want to be a volunteer, then we have a job for you. Call today.

FIRE SAFETY

The Red Cross urges families to take the time to prepare before a fire strikes by checking or installing smoke alarms, creating evacuation plans and testing those plans. Also test the smoke detectors monthly. Smoke alarms are your first line of defense because they provide you and your family a chance to escape. It is recommended that smoke alarms be placed on every level of the home, and that they are regularly cleaned. Dust and cobwebs can interfere with proper operation. Provide at least two evacuation routes out of every room in the home. And once you get out - Stay Out! Never re-enter a burning building. Call 9-1-1 from a cell phone, neighbors home, or pay phone. Direct firefighters to the location if someone may still be in the home. For more information or to pick up information available on fire safety call 864-638-5619, or come by the office.
